We wore our maglite headlamps, read magazines & listened to the battery powered radio. We ate snacks and stayed in bed to stay warm. We had been heating up pot roast from the night before in the oven. when the power went out. We kept the oven closed and it was done after the lights came on so we ate it very late in the day!

Bruce- We still had Gas and I was in the middle of cooking. We ate by candlelight and my glass hurricane lamps from the 1970's. Interesting - how many people went outside in the darkness and talked to neighbors - a search for information probably but also a search for connection and shared experience. Perhaps we should have community walk abouts. We all leave our houses for an 1 -2 hour meet and greet. Refreshments can be strategically placed in the neighborhood.

Thanks for stopping by, Andy. There may very well be valid reasons to opt out of the program at this time.
On the other hand there are valid reasons to be guinea pigs. If there are no guinea pigs, people who are willing to try something new no innovation would happen. There is no such thing as risk-free living unless you are in Colma (where there are more dead people than alive).
During the energy crisis, municipal power customers fared better than PG&E or private companies. I remember the brown outs and rolling black outs and never felt particularly secure.
I am attracted to the prospect of local control of power more than the renewable aspect. Although, I will be looking into the deep green option.
Personally, it doesn't matter if it comes out of the shareholders or customers pocket the money that PG&E is investing in Prop 16 and anti-Community power is money that could be spent towards conservation and renewable technology.

Unless you are a PG&E shareholder, you are paying nothing. all PG&E funding for these activities come from shareholders--not ratepayers. Also, check your facts regarding 100% renewable energy; MCE will NOT at inception be bringing new clean generation on-line equal to 100% of your (or anyone else's use). It will be relying heavily--and possibly exclusively--on RECs, many of which fail the additional, real and permanent tests that are required to ensure an actual reduction in GHG emissions. I support MCE's right to exist, because compeition is a mighty force that usually pays dividends to consumers. But MCE is so fundamentally flawed, that I will not be a customer during its roll-out; if they can prove out their cost claims over-time, they may woo me; but I won't be a guinea pig as they work out the kinks in the dizzingly complex, high-stakes business of energy procurement (and, eventually, generation).
