This week we learned how important taco trucks were to democracy.
Debra Bowen is our quite awesome Secretary of State, in charge of our elections. Bowen’s quest for a taco truck got on Wonkette.com’s radar. She does a great job, she deserves a great taco.

The Press Democrat reports that the SMART board subcommittee has recommended to go with heavier train cars that are more expensive and use 37% more fuel than lightrail. Whaaaa? It was not so long ago that it was decided that SMART would not stop where it would be particularly useful — Whole Foods and Downtown [...]

Whaaa? Now Is That SMART?
Novato City Council voted against having SMART go through downtown Novato at Grant Avenue. Instead SMART will stop only at Atherton and Hamilton. It was one of the bright sides of SMART passing for Maven that at least I could get on the train and go to Grant Avenue grab a [...]

“I think it’s great you have cast yourselves along with the Jetsons,” Supervisor Steve Kinsey told colleagues Arnold and McGlashan. According to the MarinIJ, it seems the Board of Supervisors approved a “letter of interest” to a company that develops these high speed monorail systems. The letter can used to attract private financing for a [...]

I said that I couldn’t endorse Measure Q, the quarter cent sales tax to fund the SMART train. It doesn’t matter because Q won.
I have been contacted by supporters who say that BART is so much more expensive with its proprietary track system. I don’t mind spending the tax money to invest in alternative transportation, [...]

Actually, my endorsements are not really shocking at all.
If you have read this blog at all it should be absolutely 1080p clear that I am a staunch supporter of Barack Obama for President. In times of crisis which were delivered to us by the republicans, we need a solid, even-tempered Obama to intelligently and with [...]

In honor of he who gives hope and awesome speeches — a round up of train news.
CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS
I agree with Northbayist that the SMART campaign has been lackluster at best. NBayist offers some reasons why. SMART has now created the North Bay Transportation Alliance…Sexy. They have just announced they will be beginning to [...]

I slept like a baby through last night’s episode of The Endless Primary Show. I couldn’t take any more sadness about Ted Kennedy or China. I have been suffering through this head cold from hell since I got back home from going to Carole Migden’s house party. It started with a sore throat, and [...]

From SMART:
January 1 was a red-letter day for Sonoma and Marin County residents, as it marked the beginning of the year in which a measure for the 70-mile SMART passenger rail-and-trail project likely will return to the ballot.
After SMART’s razor-thin loss at the polls in November 2006 (the sales-tax measure garnered 65.3 percent of the [...]

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit has a new headquarters as of Jan. 31, 2008. Along with the Transportation Authority of Marin and the Marin County Transit District, SMART’s staff of five will be moving to the San Rafael Corporate Center in downtown San Rafael, where the three agencies will share a suite of offices. Their new [...]

In a October 31st article, Marin IJ reports that there is a proposal floating around to have old fashioned electric trolleys connecting cities and towns of Marin. The architects estimate it would cost $20 million to $50 million to get a demonstration line running between The Depot in Mill Valley and the ferry terminal in [...]

Welcome Cat Woods to Marinmaven. We are glad she decided to join us. For your information, Cat Woods is the Green Candidate for District 6 Assembly (personally, our favorite political race). Feel free to post questions to both Cat and Dr. Mike, and hopefully we will get them to answer. By the way, we have [...]

I am still on the fence about SMART. I like the idea of having train system that connects North Bay counties to transit systems in the bay area. As someone who lives along Marin’s 101 corridor, I know we desperately need an alternative to automobile commute traffic. My questions have to do with what this [...]

It’s end of Summer in Marin, and that means many things. Our highway 101 congestion swells as people go back to work after using up their Summer vacations. It means surface streets being clogged with SUVs taking kids to school…

It’s hard out here for a maven. It’s hard to be civilized or sane when its so darned hot.
So, have you ever got out of your car after blasting the A/C and get smacked by a wave of unbearable heat and think, “How do people live like this?!?”, only to realize you DO live like [...]
