Thursday night Maven went to Boca restaurant after work for cocktails — brought there with tales of yummy mixed drinks for around 9 bucks. These top shelf drinks did not disappoint. Certainly, in these days, one cannot make a habit of these libations, but they make for an occasional treat. Their Boca Salad for $6.50 is pretty tasty too and friends give their hamburgers high marks.

Maven heard this on the radio and the jaw dropped open. How she can be so willfully wrong about what happened on May 19 is astonishing. The props presented were so poorly written they begged to be rejected. While there were voters on the right who wanted taxes, that small sample of the small percentage of Californians that actually voted are hardly the political tea leaves to be reading. These props were designed to go down in defeat and provide cover for politicians in Sacramento to make cuts and blame it on taxpayers. Difi is doing exactly what I expected politicians would do, blame taxpayers for their spinelessness in addressing taxation. Difi should be getting federal funding for us as Californians have paid more than their fair share of federal taxes and never get enough back. Feinstein needs to get back in touch with voters, or consider retiring. You can write to her and let her know why YOU voted against 1a-1e (most of you voted FOR 1F).

California’s Jim Crow Law Prop 8 upheld, 18K Marriages Stand

California Court to Rule on Prop 8 This Morning

Maven knows a lot of people who didn’t sleep well last night anticipating today’s 10am ruling of the California Supreme Court in regards to Prop 8. There seems to be a bit of dread coming. Someone referred to today’s ruling as waiting for Christmas day knowing there will be coal in one’s stocking. Those who heard t

he oral arguments do not expect good news and think the court will uphold H8 and are up in the air about whether the marriages that took place would be allowed to stand. There will be a gathering between 5:30-7pm of those who oppose Proposition 8 tonight at the Panama Hotel, 4 Bayview Street, San Rafael. Maven has a full schedule today, but hopes to stop by to lend support.

As most of you know, Marin Maven is passionately for LGBT rights, even though she is straight. It is important that straights of good will stand behind the LGBT community regardless of what happens today, and reclaim our state from narrow-minded bigotry.

Friday Fog Day

Maven’s arcane rituals have worked and the fog has rolled in. Maven’s war on hot Marin Summers is preceding as planned.

Depression Glass of Whine
Peg Melnik of the Press Democrat tortures us with tempting wine recommendations that are hardly depression-friendly like “Luna, 2006 Reserve Napa Valley Sangiovese, $50. A sangiovese with firm tannins. Aromas of lavender and raspberries. Notes of cherry, pomegranate and dark chocolate. Good length.” At 50 bucks a bottle, length needs to last a month. It is still Maven’s Birthday month. Anyone like to send a bottle? Would Maven be a shill for pricey, but tasty wine in return for free samples. Oh, yes.

Speaking of drinking alcohol. It appears that Autodesk has posted not-so-good 1Q2009 numbers and are planning layoffs again. They will be hiring about a 100 in a highly targeted way — hopefully in Marin.

Celebrating Harvey
Yesterday, May 21st, was Harvey Milk’s Birthday. Maven remembers when her Junior High teacher held back tears announcing that Milk and Moscone were shot and killed. This was the time where they were trying to keep gays from being teachers and we would later find out this teacher was gay. Ask Arnold to sign a bill to name May 21st, Harvey Milk Day to celebrate this man’s courage. My feeling is we may have to wait for a Democrat to be Governor in 2010.

In related news, LGBT Rights groups expect a California Supreme Court decision on Prop 8 anytime between now and the beginning of June.

The Penns
Speaking of Harvey Milk, It appears that Marinites, Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn have changed their minds again in filing for divorce.
I hesitated to really say anything because it really isn’t our business, but I wish both well regardless what they decide.

“Miss California has gone rogue” Edition

Normally, Maven would love to see a beauty pageant contestant go totally off script and not give the totally vanilla answers they give. In the case of Ms. Prejean, this Miss California (really? Miss CALIFORNIA? from OUR state? really?) went and exercised her First Amendment rights for a movement that denies other citizens rights./ Not cool at all. Given Prop 8 passing, maybe Miss California is the new face of California. If so, it makes the Maven sad.

Hope The Donald says, “Your Fired.”

Free speech doesn’t mean people will not passionately disagree with you, nor will the First Amendment help you keep your crown when you have brought unfavorable publicity to the entity you represent. If she is fired, she will always have a place on FoxNews.

A REAL Free Speech Issue

A neighbor of the Shaky Grounds cafe is forcing them to pay a lot of money for a permit for live music because this person doesn’t like Rap Music. Shaky Grounds made a lot of attempts to keep this person happy the very few times Rap was featured. A band of Freedom Fighters are holding a fundraiser this Saturday, May 16th, 6pm-11pm at the Lucas Valley Community Church (2000 Las Gallinas Avenue @ Lucas Vally Road) The fundraiser is a an all you can eat – spaghetti feed! Proceeds to benefit Shaky Grounds music license application to reopen Open Mic!
