Are Gas-Guzzling Railcars Really SMART?

The Press Democrat reports that the SMART board subcommittee has recommended to go with heavier train cars that are more expensive and use 37% more fuel than lightrail. Whaaaa? It was not so long ago that it was decided that SMART would not stop where it would be particularly useful — Whole Foods and Downtown Novato. The recommendation will be discussed by the SMART board at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the council chambers at San Rafael City Hall. Hopefully, someone will be able to take off work and let them know how crazy this idea is.
