Our Assemblymember Jared Huffman Defunds New “Cadillac Death Row”

Our Assemblymember keeps making me smile with his legislation. The California Department of Corrections wants to ultimately spend $1.6 billion to build and maintaina new Condemned Inmate Complex (CIC) at San Quentin which the legislature approved in 2003. Huffman’s bill, ABX3 22 and it’s Senate sibling, SBX3 21, sponsored by Senator Jeff Denham (R-Merced) would defund this project by $356 million (the cost of building the CIC).

This project was scheduled to break ground this Spring of 2009, and be completely by 2011. If this project is not allowed to double-cell the Death Row inmates, it will only take three years to hit capacity.

“These are hard times for California, and while Democrats and Republicans have yet reached agreement on how to bridge a $40 billion deficit, I am offering one piece of the solution: stopping prison bureaucrats from committing a $1.6 billion blunder by building a new Cadillac Death Row,” says Assemblymember Huffman.

I do not know about you, but I would rather see less cuts in education than this boondoggle that is a mere bandaid. Please contact Jared Huffman and Senator Leno if you are in this district, or your own legislator if you live outside the district.
