Maven’s Alert: New Landfill Deal Stinks
December 7, 2008
Thanks to Jimmy Fishbob Geraghty for the heads up on the latest on the Redwood Landfill. The a sub-committee of California Integrated Waste Board will have a hearing on December 9th in regards to a permit for the expansion of Redwood Landfill. The full board will meet on December 16th. Local activists are asking Marin residents to contact these members and oppose the current permit due to concerns with safety and how the plan runs counter to Marin county’s own goals of zero waste.
The current landfill is in contact with ground water and has no protective barrier between it and the tidal sloughs. The current landfill is in a flood plain and between two earthquake faults. The permit would allow a 116 foot mound — an addition of 6 million cubic yards of waste. The Green Coalition, a coalition of Marin and Sonoma environmental groups and local governments, has documented many problems to health and environment with this expansion.
They have shown the planned expansion is seismically unsound, inadequate plans for flooding or sea-rise caused by climate change, and a seriously flawed post-closure plan. 75% of the waste will be coming from outside the County.
According to Marin County’s Final Environmental Impact Report,
If the current Redwood Landfill were to be created today, it would not have been allowed in such a sensitive ecological location as the tidal wetlands.
Opponents point out that the planned mitigation by the owners have not been included in the actual permit.
The owners of the Redwood Landfill, which is North of Novato are Waste Management, Inc, the largest waste company in the nation with a long record of violations and fines at their sites across the country.
