Shelves of Rampant Capitalism

Date August 22, 2008

Long time readers remember my complaints about the store shelves of Safeway. This lead to the graphic to the left, “Safeway: Shelves Like Soviet Russia.” They have finally heard my cries and opened a real store — fully stocked and everything. I might just have to retire this graphic. Hey! Not so fast. The Nave Rd Safeway is just having its opening — give it time. Let’s see if they can keep this 55k square foot store stocked in a year from now.

The Nave Safeway site before contruction

So I did do the unthinkably crazy thing and visit the new Safeway in South Novato as it just opens. Parking was crazy and the other stores are not even open yet. If you can, find the small grocery carts because there are a lot of people and plenty of tasting booths. In the meat section they offered tasty steak morsels and apparently I had missed the wine tasting.

JUST SAY NO TO AUTO CHECKOUT

Marinmaven says, “Just say no to Auto Checkout.” I like to support jobs for actual people and I am willing to stand in line for awhile to do it. It just isn’t Safeway without the lines. would it? I am selectively a Luddite when it comes to these things. Next thing you know we will be controlled by Cylons and it will all start with that computer who allows you to scan your groceries. Come to think of it, it seems Safeway wants its customers to be unpaid clerks with no union benefits. It might be voluntary, but it is still slavery.
