President Barack Obama

Date June 5, 2008

I am absolutely thrilled. Barack Obama will be our next president. It seems that there is already a letter going out that Clinton will suspend her campaign on Saturday and throw her support toward Obama.

It will take a lot of registration drives and hard work to get the turn out, but I feel good about our chances.

There is a lot of hard feelings on the part of Clinton supporters. I understand that for many of them this was the last chance to see a woman for president in their lifetimes. I am disappointed that a woman hasn’t been president yet, but unfortunately this woman candidate made choices that alienated many Americans. While it is true Clinton did capture her own constituencies, I believe that the more they get to know Obama the more they will like him. This has happened time after time.

I have been visiting and posting on websites that call themselves democrats who are for Mccain and/or will never vote for Obama. I felt compelled to politely remind them that not voting for Obama has serious consequences for them that will effect their lives directly. Mccain will not be there for the working person and has promised to appoint supreme court justices who will rule against the people far beyond reproductive rights.

I am a feminist who worked for Mondale-Ferraro because I wanted to see a woman vice president. I spent the entire 1990s defending the Clintons. I defended Clinton when the press characterized her as crying in New Hampshire.

If I had a dollar for every time my candidate didn’t win the nomination for the Democratic Party, I would be rich. Kennedy, Hart, Hart, Brown, Bradley, and Kuchinich were my choices and some of the those fights were tough. I have actually held my nose and voted for the Democrats choice over and over, and it was okay.

Would you completely disregard women’s reproductive rights allow the US Supreme Court turn ultra-right by allowing Mccain to win? Really? Do you really want 100 years of war in Iraq? Do you really want Mccain, who has admitted that he isn’t up on the economy to run our country? I understand that you feel upset that your candidate didn’t win, but if you believe in Democratic Party principles I ask you to reconsider. If you believe in what the republicans have to offer– please continue this campaign.

If the popular vote ever meant anything, Al Gore would have been our president. The numbers the Clinton are using for the popular vote excludes about 6 states, so I wouldn’t put too much stock in that.

I was once a Clinton supporter, but after I learned that they were dishonest about Obama’s reproductive rights record I actually researched his record and found that much of what was claimed by the Clintons were untrue. I invite you to find out what he really believes from his website. The way he has run his campaign has made me proud to have changed my support.

I also feel that Obama has demonstrated he can grow this party. This is the first time I have seen young people not only vote but get energized about working for a candidate. This is the first time I have seen people in their 30s and 40s who have never voted before come out and vote and work for a candidate. College kids in Texas walked 7.3 miles to vote this primary season. Obama has inspired something different. When was the last time a Presidential candidate inspired artists?

Obama represents a grassroots movement to take back our government and take responsibility for the change we seek. I invite you to join this movement.

I invite folks to post their views here. I know there are forums who don’t want to hear from Obama supporters, but I want to hear from Clinton supporters. I am reaching out to you guys so we can unite and beat the republicans in November.

Your Pal,

Maven
