Woolsey Responds to Constituents on Superdelegate Issue

Date March 26, 2008

[First of all I want to apologize for a database error that wiped the original version of this post away. I am not sure what happened, but my post on wireless cafe's wiped out the Woolsey article with a comment. My initial attempts to correct did not seem to do the trick. I think I may have fixed it. Again, apologies for the confusion]

As I last posted, I received a letter from Woolsey on her campaign letterhead. Since I last posted people have told me that since her Superdelegate status is not a part of her job as a Congressperson, it may be illegal to use official Congressional letterhead or use money from her office. This could be the case. The only reason I asked is that she is Superdelegate because she holds this office, so I thought it would be permissible. It really isn’t important anyway. Just noticed.

Dear Ms. Castellucci

Thank you for contacting me regarding my endorsement of Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2008 Presidential election. I value your concern and input on this issue.

Across the country voters are energized and excited about this primary. They’re not only turning out in record numbers to vote, but thousands have gotten involved with the campaign as volunteers, making the Democratic Party stronger than ever.

After all of this excitement, no one wants our party’s nominee to be chosen by the votes of a handful of super delegates. It should come as no surprise to anyone that I won’t stand for it either. That’s why, while I remain a strong Hillary Clinton supporter, I will cast my vote at the convention for the candidate that is chosen not through back room deals, but by the votes of the American public.

Again, thank you for your interest in this matter.

Sincerely,

Lynn Woolsey

Since I first posted, I have been asked what Woolsey means when she talks about “American Public”. Is she saying that she will follow the votes of her constituents, California, the nation including Michigan and Florida? We don’t know whether she would vote with her constituents or not. I can only guess that she is open to voting for Obama at the convention even though she supports Clinton if she determines the American public wants Obama. The letter is vague.
