My goodness. I just read wkirkland’s link and I can’t get over the fact the Joe is associated with war capitalism and reckless expansion in Marin County. And being joined at the hip with the insurance industry! I was shocked to see that he wants to punish the poor by taking away their tax returns if they don’t buy insurance. Somebody called him a cameleon, a lizard. I think that’s correct. I’m voting for Mark Leno.

By the way, I see via Calitics ( a great site! ) that the SF Bay Guardian has endorsed Leno.

How is this for a few reasons to think three times before supporting Joe Nation? From Randy Shaw in Beyond Chron.

“He criticized Lynn Woolsey’s demand for timetables for withdrawing troops, not moving toward the progressive stance until just before the June 2006 primary election.

In March 2003, Nation did not join an anti-war letter signed by 52 members of the state Legislature that expressed “opposition to the war on Iraq without a formal resolution by the United States Security Council or a declaration of war by Congress.” The letter was sent to President Bush and California’s congressional delegation.

In January 2006, Nation refused to support an Assembly resolution calling for the return of California’s National Guard troops from Iraq. Unlike Leno, Nation never became a co-sponsor of this resolution.

Lynn Woolsey has gotten less national publicity than Barbara Lee for her antiwar activism, but when Nation chose to attempt to unseat her in 2006, he sought to remove one of Congress’s strongest voices for peace. And a Nation victory would have sent a pro-war message to Democrats running in Congressional races across the country, eroding the anti-war message that soon gave Democrats control of the House and Senate in the November 2006 elections.”

I really appreciate your analysis. As you’ve determined, I too believe the attacks re the progressive label are unfounded. Joe’s record says the complete opposite. I wish I understand where that was coming from. Does anyone in your readership know?
