The Away Station: A Way to Achieve Zero Waste in Marin

While attending the North Bay Sustainable Business Green Drinks mixer this past February, I met Carrie Bachelder from The Away Station. The Away Station would provide a central place in the North Bay where residents and contractors to send their unwanted items and construction and deconstruction waste. The materials can be sorted, rehabilitated. and reused by the public.

The center could be home to professionals in home and office organizers, construction and deconstruction, furniture refurnishers. There would be rental space for flea markets and fundraising activities. Non-profits could visit to find stuff on their wishlists. Entry level employment and training can be made available as pickup drivers, sorters, repair, and customer service. The Away Station would take building materials, fixtures, hardware, cabinetry, clothing, housewares, furniture, books, office supplies, CDs, computers, electronics, sporting goods, collectibles, antiques, consignables, art supplies, and other materials.

The Away Station is there to get Marin and Sonoma county towards the goal of Zero Waste by diverting solid waste from our landfills to reuse. They have been looking for a place in Novato and need for us to contact the Novato City Council and Marin County Board of Supervisors in support of this project.
