Turn Yellow Cabs GREEN

Nancy Isles Nation reported in the Marin IJ today that a new taxi service in Marin will use hybrids. The conventional cab company in our area claims that they get 33 MPG which they say is competitive with hybrids (huh?). Studies show fleets like what they use are in the teens when it comes to MPG. I think that all cabs should be converted into hybrids or electric cars.

Back in May 2007, New York mayor Bloomberg announced that the entire fleet of New York cabs (more than 13,000) will become all hybrid by 2012. If New York can do it, why can’t we?

It would make a difference in gasoline consumption and air quality. I also think rental cars should be hybrids or electric cars as well. We live in an area that attracts tourists and business travelers, so wouldn’t it be great if they could rent cars that can consume less gasoline (less tourists have to spend on gas they can spend in our stores, restaurants, and lodging places). I know that if I had to rent a car, i would rent a hybrid or electric car in a heartbeat. Wouldn’t you?

ZEB-o-licious

A Hydrogen powered bus has been taking a trial run in Marin. Since the fare taking system on the bus is not compatible with the Golden Gate Transit system the rides are FREE. The bus gets recharged in Richmond overnight (during non-peak power consumption).

The zero-emissions bus, or ZEB, will operate from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays through March 31. The bus will rotate on several Marin Transit local routes, including Route 23 (San Rafael, San Anselmo, Fairfax, Manor); Route 29 (San Rafael, Larkspur Landing, Marin General Hospital, College of Marin, San Anselmo); Route 49 (Ignacio, Hamilton, Marin Civic Center, San Rafael); Route 51 (San Marin, Novato, Sutter Novato Medical Center, Vintage Oaks Shopping Center, Indian Valley College, Ignacio); and Route 139 (Terra Linda High School, Terra Linda, Marinwood, Lucas Valley.)

I believe that all buses in our region need to convert to these zero emission buses. I live right near 101 and I worry about the air quality of vehicles who go back and forth on 101 and in our neighborhoods. I think school buses need to be converted as well. How about airport shuttles?
