Mickey Moves to Hamilton Landing

Date March 9, 2008

The North Bay Business Journal has reported that Disney plans to move its growing Imagemovers Digital 3-D from San Rafael to Hamilton Landing. They will be moving in December 2008. Other tenants include: Smith & Hawken, Oracle, Cytograft Tissue Engineering, Take Two Interactive, Activision Publishing, Halcyon Investment Partners, Clair Mail, Toys for Bob, Marin Community Foundation, Nihilistic Software, Birkenstock Distribution, Sony Imageworks, a library, the YMCA, Visual Concepts Entertainment.

Imagemovers Digital is a partnership between Disney Studios and Director Robert Zemeckis that will create movies using performance capture, the 3-D computer animation technique like “Polar Express” and “Beowolf.”

Imagemovers will occupy two hangers for a total of 120k square feet. There work force will be increasing almost double.
Rents at Hamilton are around $34 to $36 per square foot, but compared to $50 per square foot in downtown San Francisco, it is a bargain.

It will be interesting if Marin-Sonoma gets to be the center of Digital Filmmaking. How will this impact traffic patterns? Will all the people Hamilton Landing stay at Hamilton Landing, or will spouses have to find work in San Francisco? Will this increase the traffic on 101, and will there be a viable mass transit system to save us?
