Rocker slowly loses his rocker-cred living in Lucas Valley
February 15, 2008

With all due respect to his death metal minions, Metallica rocker, James Hetfield maybe slowly losing his rocker credentials after denying access to his open space due to finding too many beer bottles and cigarette butts.
As a result of this litter, Hetfields caretaker, Red Horse Contractors, constructed gates at the West end of the Terra Linda divide open space, cutting off trail access from Sleepy Hollow and Lucas Valley to Loma Alta. Also lost is the continuance of the Loma Alta route westward of the San Domenico public easement. Residents of the area have been allowed to use this area to hike, walk their dogs, bike, and ride their horses since the 1950s.
No one likes people who litter in our open spaces or on our own property. It has been very cool that Hetfield’s purchase of the property gave the area plenty of open space in the deal. It is way uncool, to deny residents who behave themselves the opportunity to hike and bike on community trails just because occasionally irresponsible kids party. The residents who frequent say that the area have not seen such litter and call it, “one of the cleanest, debris-free, publicly-used fire roads anywhere.”
It is not only the loss of access that concerns residents, but the extensive fire break work that is being done and construction of a huge water tank right on the crest visible miles away. There are question of jurisdiction and permitting. Residents have been contacting supervisors and open space officials for help.
As someone who enjoys hiking in these fire roads in the hills of Marinwood and Terra Linda, I feel strongly that we come up with the best plan to make sure our trails are accessible and well kept to allow everyone to keep on rockin’ and rolling in our wonderful hills.
